What is ECBOL.org?

ECBOL.org was initially established within EDIT, the European Distributed Institute of Taxonomy (an EU Network of Excellence) to complement CBOL’s activities from a European perspective. The idea of ECBOL.org was created within EDIT workpackage 3.4 “DNA barcoding” and is an information and coordination hub maintained by the Centraalbureau voor Schimmelcultures (CBS) in Utrecht. The person behind ECBOL.org is Lorenzo Lombard (barcodeATcbs.knaw.nl). As a result of EDIT and the DNA Barcoding in Europe meeting in 2007 the ECBOL initative (not to be confused with ECBOL.org) was started, which proposes to find funding for a network of European leading labs in the field of DNA barcoding.

What is ECBOL.org doing?

  • ECBOL.org seeks to advance taxonomy by sequencing relevant DNA loci of taxonomic types many of which are located in European collections, specifically by adding value to these collections by providing DNA signatures for specimens.

  • ECBOL.org maintains a list of researchers and institutions in Europe who are involved in DNA barcoding. If you want to get involved, please click here.

  • ECBOL.org promotes Europe becoming a central node in the International Barcode of Life Project, iBOL.

  • ECBOL.org offers a platform for interchange and finding partners for international (European) initiatives in the context of DNA barcoding. Complementary to CBOL's working groups, European researchers are invited to state their interest, find partners and work towards getting funding for DNA barcoding projects (Funding groups).

  • ECBOL.org offers this website also as a forum for the above interest/funding groups where new information can be posted and exchanged, see here.
